ChatGPT Just Put Ads Inside Image Generation. Should Your Business Care?
If your customers are already asking ChatGPT which plumber to call, here is the next shoe to drop. On October 5, OpenAI announced it will start testing visual ads inside ChatGPT's image generation.
Later this month, in the United States, a small group of advertisers will run clearly labeled image ads while users are creating pictures with the AI.
This is not a theoretical someday. This is a test with a start date.
Why this matters more than one ad format
The image ads are the headline, but the real story is the machine they bolt onto.
ChatGPT's ad program went from a U.S. test in February to more than 60 countries and a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate by the end of August.
Along the way, 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week.
But early advertisers were complaining about 3 things...
weak measurement
too few formats
too little inventory
So this latest announcement answers the first two in one swing.
On the same day, OpenAI rolled out a serious measurement toolkit: conversion-data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, ten attribution partners including AppsFlyer and Adjust, geo-lift experiments with Haus and Measured, and brand-safety pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
In plain English, advertisers can finally tell whether a ChatGPT ad actually made their phone ring.
Which is the piece that was missing, and now it's not.
What the Ads Actually Look Like
Today every ChatGPT ad is a single labeled card below a response.
The new format changes the setting: ads appear during image generation, kept separate from the picture ChatGPT creates, with clear labels. OpenAI keeps repeating that advertising does not influence ChatGPT's answers.
Take that as their stated policy, not a third-party audit.
Two things worth knowing about who sees ads at all.
They only show to people on the Free and Go plans.
Paying subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts see none.
So your audience here is a price-conscious casual user, not exactly the executive on the company account.
The Results They Brag About (..and How To Read Them)
OpenAI published four partner-reported wins. WeightWatchers reported a cost per acquisition 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark.
Portland Leather said 93% of visitors from ChatGPT ads were brand new.
Dose, a wellness brand, claimed 2.3x more incremental orders than last-click attribution captured.
Notice what all of those have in common. They're hand-picked advertiser claims by OpenAI with no public methodology.
Treat them as the ceiling of what is possible, not a forecast for your business.
The Honest Take for a 1-to-20-Person Business
Should you rush in and buy ChatGPT ads for your plumbing company or law firm?
Not yet. Here is the straight read.
Visual moments favor visual products. Someone generating images is already picturing something, so furniture, fashion, food, and travel fit naturally. Home services are not as far behind as you might think. A bathroom remodeler showing before-and-after imagery at the exact moment someone is designing their dream bathroom is not a bad fit at all. A handyman offering leak repair? Less so.
Inventory is still thin. One agency executive told Digiday there are about 2.5 billion prompts a day on ChatGPT versus roughly 15 billion Google searches, and there is only one ad slot per answer. If you need scale, this channel cannot carry your budget this quarter.
The smarter play is still organic visibility. Every dollar of attention here reinforces what I have been saying all month: your business needs to be the answer ChatGPT gives for free, not the ad it shows next to one. The businesses winning recommendations in ChatGPT are the ones with complete profiles, real reviews, and content that actually answers customer questions. That work pays off across every AI platform, not just one ad test.
Watch, don't wait.
ChatGPT ads are where Google Ads was in about 2003: cheap attention, crude tools, huge headroom. The measurement fixes answer early advertisers' complaints, which is usually the moment a platform goes from experiment to budget line. Keep one eye on it.
One marketing trends roundup put ChatGPT's visual ads and new measurement partners right alongside AI Overviews on brand searches and Performance Max updates.
The pattern is clear.
The AI layer is becoming a full advertising ecosystem, not a curiosity.
Here is your to-do list for this week.
One, make sure your tracking pixel is installed and healthy, because measurement only helps advertisers whose conversions actually reach the platform.
Two, keep building the organic presence that gets you recommended in AI answers.
Three, bookmark this space and check back when the test expands beyond the initial U.S. group.
If your business is a visual one, start sketching the creative you would run. Image-led ads reward businesses that already have great before-and-after photos.
The future of advertising is a conversation, not a results page.
Getting your house in order now costs a lot less than catching up later.
