ChatGPT Swaps Out Half Its Local Business Picks Within Days. Here's How to Stay on the List.

Getting recommended by ChatGPT used to feel like a one-time win. You showed up in an answer, screenshots flew in the group chat, and you figured you had it made. A new study says otherwise. The list gets rewritten constantly, and your spot is never really yours.

The Spearleaf local AI search study (released September 25, 2026) measured ChatGPT's local business panels across 216 U.S. markets, then asked the exact same questions again four to nine days later. Only 48.2 percent of the businesses displayed the first time showed up the second time, and the number one recommendation survived in only 34.1 percent of markets. Same question, same week, different winners.

Your Google Ranking Holds Still. ChatGPT Doesn’t.

The study measured stability on both surfaces, and the gap is wild. Google's traditional local pack barely moved between the two waves, with a 0.82 overlap score. ChatGPT's panel scored 0.36. The businesses named inside Google's AI Overviews were the jumpiest of all at 0.26.

The Google Business Profile you optimized last quarter works like an investment. A ChatGPT recommendation works like a lottery ticket re-drawn every few days.

What the Survivors Had in Common

The good news: the study found clear patterns in the survivors, and every one is in your control.

First, a real local address. Businesses with an address in the city being asked about were far more likely to be displayed, with a descriptive odds ratio of 14.4. Fully 92.0 percent of displayed cards carried an in-city address, versus 73.9 percent of the candidates that didn't get shown.

Second, review depth. The businesses still shown a week later carried a median of 226 reviews, against 164 for the ones that dropped. Third, the rating bar: the median minimum rating on a panel was 4.8, the price of entry, with review volume as the separator.

Fourth, show up where the AI looks. Yelp ratings, not Google ratings, appeared on 17.4 percent of the displayed cards. And reviews.birdeye.com was the most retrieved domain in the study, appearing in 37.7 percent of markets. Your reviews can't just live on Google.

As the study's founder Joshua Albanese put it: "You can't hold a rank in AI search. You can only be worth recommending every time it looks, and be everywhere it looks."

Getting Named Is Only Half the Battle

Here's the twist. An October 2026 AI search watch found that ChatGPT named a real local business in 268 of 390 answers, about seven in ten. But roughly four in five of those named businesses had no link to their own website in the answer.

So there are two problems to solve.

First, get named. Second, make sure the customer who sees your name can actually find you. A claimed, complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings across directories, and a phone number that's easy to find are what turn a mention into a call.

And the demand is very real. BrightLocal found 45% of US consumers used AI tools for local recommendations in 2026, up from 6% a year earlier. This is a referral channel the size of word of mouth, except it reshuffles itself every few days.

The Boring Checklist That Actually Works

Nobody can buy a permanent spot, and you should run from anyone selling a guaranteed ChatGPT mention.

OpenAI says its product results are not ads and are not influenced by partnerships. What you can do is the unglamorous stuff that stacks the odds in your favor:

  • Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and Apple Business Connect listings. Consistency across all three matters.

  • Make sure your website lets AI search crawlers in. Check your robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, before you do anything else.

  • Give every service you offer and every area you cover its own clear page, written in plain language.

  • Build a steady stream of genuine reviews and protect a 4.8-plus rating. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy. Do it weekly.

  • Complete your Yelp listing and your industry's main directories. The study shows AI assistants read them.

None of it is exciting. All of it is what kept the survivors on the list week after week.
