Why ChatGPT Recommends Your Competitor (and Not You)
Updated: Oct 6
Here's a stat that should make every independent business owner smile: big chain locations show up in Google's local top three about 36% of the time, but ChatGPT recommends them only 1.2% of the time.
Read that again. The biggest brands on earth, with their billion-dollar marketing budgets, and the AI shrugs and picks somebody else 98.8% of the time.
How could this be?
Because ChatGPT and other AI's don't care about how fancy your logo is.
They care about your reputation, and they checks the receipts.
What the AI actually looks at
According to SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, when ChatGPT recommends a local business, it judges each individual location on four things:
Your rating. Not your brand. Your stars.
Your recent reviews. Not 2019. This month.
Whether you reply to them. Yes, the AI notices.
Whether your details are consistent everywhere. Same name, same address, same phone — across the whole internet.
That's it. No secret handshake. No ad budget required.
Just the unglamorous blocking and tackling of reputation management.
The Punchline for Small Business Owners
Here's the beautiful part: this is a game a local business can win.
A national chain has 500 locations and a corporate social media team; you have a dozen five-star reviews from last month and you actually answered all of them with personalized responses.
Guess which one the AI trusts more?
The chains win Google's map pack with scale. But the recommendation layer, the "who should I call?" moment, is graded location by location, review by review.
That's a fair fight, and frankly, it's one the little guy is built to win.
So what do you actually do?
The same things marketers have been saying for years now, with an AI seal of approval:
Ask for reviews. Every job. Every happy customer. Make it stupid-easy with a direct link.
Reply to all of them. The good, the bad, the weird. Especially the bad — that's where future customers are watching.
Keep your listings consistent. Your name, address, and phone number should match everywhere Google, Yelp, and Facebook look.
Keep them coming. A dozen reviews from 2023 doesn't cut it. Recency matters to robots and humans alike.
None of this requires a $5,000-a-month agency. (A thirty-dollar-a-month tool can't fake it either — the AI can tell.) It requires someone who gives a damn about your reputation, week after week.
One Honest Caveat
The SOCi study measured 2,751 multi-location brands, so the 1.2% figure is specifically referring to chain locations specifically.
The "independents have an opening" part is my read of what that implies, not the study's headline. But the four factors the AI grades?
Those apply to everybody, including you.
So here's the question: if someone asked ChatGPT for the best company in your trade in your town today, would it say your name, or your competitor's?
If you're not sure, that's exactly what I help small business owners with at Matt Davis Marketing.
