87% of Small Business Owners Are Ignoring AI Search. Be the Other 13%.

Here's a number pair that should stop you in your tracks.

45% of U.S. consumers asked an AI tool to recommend a local business in the past year, up from 6% the year before.

Meanwhile, only 13% of small business owners are actively optimizing their websites for AI search.

Read that again. Nearly half your customers are asking a robot who to hire, and almost nine out of ten businesses haven't lifted a finger about it.

These numbers come from BCC Interactive's AI search statistics roundup, published October 10, 2026. They gathered 109 sourced stats from studies by BrightLocal, Yext, SOCi, Local Falcon, and others, all checked against the original research. I've pulled the ones that matter most for businesses like yours.

Your Customers Moved. You Haven't.

31% of consumers used ChatGPT for business recommendations in the past year.

23% used Google's AI Mode.

Among adults aged 30 to 44, a full 64% asked AI for a business recommendation.

On the business side? In Bluehost's State of Small Business AI Confidence 2026 survey of 350 owners, 22% said they'd first heard of AI search optimization during the survey itself.

Nearly six in ten say they don't know where to start, per a Squarespace and Peec AI study.

That gap is your opportunity. 78% of owners want to see how their competitors show up in AI results. If you move first, you're not just optimizing.

You're lapping the field.

AI Reads the Same Sources You've Been Neglecting

The good news? Chat doesn't just pull business recommendations from thin air.

According to BrightLocal's 2026 citation study of nearly two million citations across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT:

  • Your Google Business Profile makes up 28.5% of all AI citations for local businesses.

  • Yelp appears as a source in 80% of ChatGPT's answers about local businesses.

  • About 93% of cited domains were individual business websites.

In other words, the same places customers go to check you out are the same places AI goes to learn about you.

A complete, current Google Business Profile, a solid review presence, and a clear website aren't just SEO basics anymore.

They're your AI resume.

The Little Guy Can Actually Win This One

My favorite stat in the whole roundup: independent restaurants appeared in Google's AI recommendations 29.1% of the time, more than twice the rate of chains with five or more locations at 13.9%, per Local Falcon's Restaurant AI Visibility Index.

This isn't a game where the biggest ad budget wins.

Chat picks based on clear, structured information. A one-truck plumbing shop with a complete profile and strong reviews can beat a regional chain with a stale listing.

If you're a 1-to-20-person operation, AI-search is arguably the most level playing field you've ever had.

Check What AI Says About You Today. Seriously.

Two stats from the roundup should make you stop and do this right after reading:

  • 40% of small businesses have already found incorrect information about their business in AI search (Squarespace and Peec AI).

  • 97% of people who use AI for local recommendations double-check those recommendations against real reviews at least some of the time (BrightLocal).

So AI might be getting your hours, your services, or even your phone number wrong, and the people it sends your way will go verify against your reviews and your Google profile anyway. Both ends of that funnel run on the same sources. Get them right.

Your Three-Move Play

You don't need a moonshot here. You need the basics, done well:

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile. Every field. Real photos. Updated hours. It feeds more than a quarter of AI citations.

  2. Get your reviews flowing and reply to all of them. AI trusts review-rich profiles, and 97% of AI users check your reviews afterward anyway.

  3. Make your website answer real questions. Clear services, clear service area, clear contact info. 58% of AI users visit the business's website directly after getting a recommendation, per Yext's Consumer Search Behaviors Report. Make sure it sells.

Only 13% of your competitors are doing this. Be the other 13%.
