What Does Local SEO Cost in 2026? Let's Look at the Real Numbers
Updated: Oct 6
"How much should local SEO cost?" is one of the first questions every business owner asks me, and one of the hardest to answer honestly without data.
So let's start with data.
Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO service providers and found local SEO retainers average $1,557 a month. Break it down further and the picture gets clearer:
DIY tools: $30–$90/month. You run everything yourself.
Freelancers: $1,150/month on average.
Agencies: $1,819/month on average.
Full-service agencies in competitive markets: $2,500–$5,000+/month.
The most common rate band across the whole survey was $501–$1,000 a month. So if someone quotes you $400 or $4,000, neither number is crazy on its face — it depends on what you're actually buying.
Why Home-Service Business SEO Costs More
Here's the part that matters for plumbers, roofers, HVAC companies, and everyone else in the trades: categories where one new customer is worth thousands of dollars see higher SEO budgets.
That's not agencies being greedy, it's math.
When a single roof replacement pays for a year of SEO, the competition for the Google Maps 3-pack gets fierce, and fierce competition takes more work to beat.
A quiet retail shop in a small town might be fine at $500 a month.
A roofer fighting twelve competitors in the same zip code is not.
The Price Isn’t the Real Question. Proof Is.
Here's what I tell every prospect: the sticker price is not the number that matters. What matters is whether you can verify what you're paying for.
Can they show you, every month:
How many calls your website and Google Business Profile generated?
Where you rank for the searches your customers actually make?
What your reviews look like versus the competitors above you?
If the answer is a PDF of "activity" with no calls attached, you're not buying SEO — you're buying a subscription to someone's to-do list. (This is exactly why 60% of AI-adopting small businesses just fired their marketing agencies, per a recent Citizens survey. Unprovable spend gets cut first.)
And walk away from anyone who guarantees a specific ranking or timeline.
Google's own guidance says timelines vary, nobody controls the algorithm, and no honest provider promises position one.
Where We Land: Local SEO Starting at $799/Month
At Matt Davis Marketing, Local SEO starts at $799 per month with a 3-month minimum commitment.
No confusing package grid. No hourly billing for every small optimization. And no wondering what your SEO company actually did this month.
I’m able to keep pricing competitive because Matt Davis Marketing is intentionally lean and founder-led. You’re not paying for a huge agency payroll, a downtown office, or layers of account managers. You’re working directly with me — and I use modern tools, automation, and AI to work more efficiently without removing the human strategy behind the work.
For most local service businesses, that means focusing on the things that can actually improve visibility and generate opportunities:
Google Business Profile optimization, website SEO, local content, citation and listing management, review growth, ranking and lead tracking, and straightforward monthly reporting.
The goal isn’t to bury you in SEO jargon or impress you with a 40-page PDF.
It’s to improve the metrics that matter: visibility, calls, leads, rankings, and reviews.
There is one expectation I like to set upfront: SEO is a process, not a switch.
The first 60–90 days are typically focused on strengthening the foundation — correcting technical issues, optimizing your Google presence, improving important pages, cleaning up local listings, and identifying the search opportunities worth pursuing.
From there, we use the data to see what’s gaining traction and continue improving it. Some businesses see movement quickly; more meaningful growth often develops over the following months depending on the market, competition, and starting point.
I’d rather set realistic expectations from day one than promise you a #1 ranking by next Tuesday. 😅
So what should you pay?
Price the work to the competition you can see on Google Maps today. Search your trade + your town. If three competitors are sitting in the map pack above you with 200 reviews each, that's the fight you're buying into, and $1,000 a month with proof attached beats $1,819 a month with a PDF of activities.
Want to see where you actually stand before spending anything? That's what I do.
One honest look at your market, and I'll tell you straight whether SEO is worth your money right now, even if the answer is "not yet."
